Vancouver Whitecaps send playoff message with Sounders rout

Watch out, Western Conference contenders: Vancouver Whitecaps FC are hitting the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs in record-breaking form.

The West's freshly-minted No. 1 seed delivered their second straight blowout victory on Sunday, setting new club milestones for home wins (11) and points (35) in an MLS regular season with a 5-1 shellacking of Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders FC at BC Place.

Brian White’s brace and additional goals from Ryan Gauld, Mathías Laborda and Aleksa Cvetković also helped the 'Caps become just the fourth team in MLS history to record back-to-back 60-plus point seasons.

And with home-field advantage guaranteed through the Western Conference Final and possibly MLS Cup presented by Audi on Dec. 18, the vibes are high in Vancouver.

"It's definitely about making sure we have the right feelings going into the playoffs," head coach Jesper Sørensen told reporters after tying the league record for points in a manager's first two MLS seasons (124).

"... I think we have a great, competitive situation. Players know that they have to perform well to be on the pitch and stay on the pitch."

White, Gauld shine

Chief among Sunday's top performers were White and Gauld, who stole the spotlight with German legend Thomas Müller watching the entire game from the substitute's bench.

After scoring his 100th career MLS goal (regular season + playoffs) on Wednesday, White reached 20 goals in a season for the first time in his career, while also becoming the first player in Vancouver's MLS era to score 100 goals across all competitions.

Gauld, meanwhile, boosted his MLS Comeback Player of the Year credentials with 1g/2a that helped the Whitecaps become the first team to achieve a perfect record in the Cascadia Cup (4W-0L-0D record vs. Seattle and Portland Timbers) since its 2004 launch.

"I think it's important that you carry the momentum into the playoffs," said Gauld. "I don't think chopping and changing too many things in your own habits, and the way that we do things, is the right way to go about it.

"So, it's just carrying on and doing the same things."

All eyes on MLS Cup

On that note, Vancouver won't take their foot off the gas during Saturday's Decision Day visit to CF Montréal despite having the West's top seed locked up (4 pm ET | Apple TV).

"We're optimistic about this final part of the season," said Sørensen. "And hopefully we are also able to show it."

For Sørensen, who led the 'Caps to the Concacaf Champions Cup and MLS Cup finals last year, there can only be one goal in mind for 2026.

"We all know that we have the same aim: We want to win MLS Cup. We were close last year, and now we have the chance again."
