TRACKER STATUS: Signing
Atlanta United have acquired midfielder Mauricio Amaro from Uruguayan top-flight side Defensor Sporting, the club announced Friday.
The 21-year-old Uruguayan youth international is under contract through the 2028-29 season with an option for 2029-30.
Amaro will occupy U22 Initiative and international roster slots.
“We’re excited to add a top young talent like Mauricio to Atlanta United,” said chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson.
“He’s a player who will strengthen our midfield with his tackling, ball-winning, competitiveness and ability to drive forward and split lines in possession. We look forward to welcoming him to the club.”
Amaro recorded two assists in 64 appearances with Sporting. Internationally, he represented Uruguay at the U-20 level.
Amaro is the Five Stripes' third signing this summer, alongside veteran defenders Júnior Alonso and Paulo Díaz. Alonso played for Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Atlanta are 15th in the Eastern Conference standings with 12 points. They're looking to return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in manager Gerardo "Tata" Martino's second stint with the club.
